Sensory playdough

Playdough has always been a favourite around our house. Today I decided to do something a bit different and make some sensory playdough. I used to make it for the students I taught (students with severe and multiple disabilities) but hadn't got around to doing it with my own kids until today. I made two types of playdough; an orange scented one and one with glitter in it. I used to make chocolate playdough and peanut butter playdough for the students I taught but thought that might be too much of a temptation for my own kids, especially Esme who likes to eat absolutely everything! There are lots of different things you can experiment with putting in playdough though.

Both Jacob and Esme enjoyed the smell of the orange scented playdough. Jacob kept going over to sniff it and saying 'you smell it too Esme, it smells nice'. So cute!

The kids enjoyed rolling and cutting out shapes from the playdough. I got the meat tenderiser out too and Jacob had fun bashing his playdough with it (I have fond memories of using one of these with my playdough when I was younger too ;)) You can see the glitter in the close up of the shape that Jacob has cut out.

I'm sure you all have your own playdough recipe but this is my personal favourite (I have not yet been converted to the no cooking kind of playdough as you can tell!) You can add glitter or any scented oil to the ingredients as well, or experiment with adding something different altogether.

Playdough

Ingredients
Mix:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar

Then add:
1 cup water
1 tablespoon oil
food colouring

Method
Stir, cook on medium heat 3-5 minutes until dough is pliable.

Arrgh! I bougnht the cream of tartar something like 6 weeks ago and I still have not used it to make playdough!

But, I did buy some really cheap, so until that is all mixedc together, or dried out, I might have to wait ... but peanut butter play dough has definitely sparked my interest :D

Cool post about sensory playdough. We need to make some...we have not made any since March or so.
Looks like it was fun for all! Thanks for sharing.

Hmmm my 5yo is nut allergic and we got some Sweet William chocolate spread thinking we could use it as a Nutella substitute. But the girls don't like it. I'm thinking that might work well as a chocolate playdough thing. Great inspiration thank you :)

Thank you for the reminder, I really must get around to scenting our playdough next time we make a batch. I love the smell of citrus so the orange would have been just divine.
